The eclectic offerings of downtown Fernandina Beach now include an indoor beer garden. Last week, The Alley by Amelia Island Brewing Company opened at 316 Centre St. in Fernandina Beach, next door to its sister restaurant, Amelia Tavern.

NCSO bailiff dies with COVID-19

People say “Grumpy” never lived up to his name. Nassau County Sheriff’s Office deputy Jack “Grumpy” Gwynes died Feb. 3 after a long battle with COVID-19. He was 61. Gwynes joined the sheriff’s office in 2019 after working at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for more than 20 years.

When Rebecca Smith arrived on Amelia Island, she was one of the most qualified parent volunteers in the Nassau County School District. After all, she’d been a teacher in multiple school districts in Maryland and California, and as assistant principal at Swansfield Elementary School in Columbia, Md.

Keep Nassau Beautiful celebrated Florida Arbor Day with its second Adopt-A-Tree project. This year, Keep Nassau Beautiful distributed 500 free trees to Nassau County residents – one year after the group gave away 340 free trees.

In order to save customers from having to bag and bundle or pay a $5.81 rate increase to Waste Management, the city is in the process of taking over that operation with a lower $3 hike in rates.

The city of Fernandina Beach is considering once again collecting yard waste and mulching it at the city’s airport instead of relying on Waste Management to pick up that waste as part of its regular duties.

Mother of all inspirations

Kristan Cronin didn’t have to look far to find inspiration in the field of education.  She simply looked toward her mother. Cronin’s mother, Nancy Hall, was a longtime educator in Indiana, where she taught high school special needs students.
