Concerned Friends of Fernandina held a forum Friday to give the candidates for the Fernandina Beach City Commission a chance to answer questions about some major issues facing the city.

The host West Nassau Warriors edged the Yulee Hornets 7-0 Friday to push to 2-0 on the season. On Friday, Justice Pope was 7-of-9 for 105 passing yards with two interceptions and two fumbles. JaCaiyden Albertie had 11 carries for 35 yards and reeled in a pass for 32 yards.

OHPA passes new budget

Despite one member’s suggestion to reconsider a combined $32,500 increase in commissioners’ salaries, the Ocean Highway and Port Authority passed a proposed budget that uses carry-over funds to cover their fiscal year 2020-21 budget’s $18,340 deficit.

New Zion Missionary Baptist Church is one of the oldest churches on Amelia Island. New Zion was established in 1870 under the leadership of Reverend Lewis Cook, a pioneer of the Gospel, with 69 followers.

Pickleball tourney held

The Fernandina Beach Pickleball Pirates hosted the Swingers round robin tournament Sept. 4-5 at the Central Park pickleball courts. Eight teams in each of the three divisions (3.0, 3.5 and 4.0+) competed. Players were required to have a partner who was not related to him or her. Winners at the 3.
