Young Wildcats kick off spring football workouts

The opening of Camden County High’s spring football practice last week brought more than 200 players, but many who have not seen the fire of Friday night. Only 20, according to head coach Jeff Herron, are seniors. “We’re a really young team,” he said after workouts last Thursday and Friday.

’Cat boys fall to North Paulding in state tennis duel

Taking early control Tuesday, North Paulding dismissed Camden County from the state Class 7A boys tennis playoffs, 3-1 in Kingsland. Seeded third from Region 3, the Wolfpack won the opening set at all five positions and captured the first three completed matches to claim an insurmountable lead.

The Camden County High rifle ’Cats cleared the first hurdle of state competition last Saturday, defeating visiting Etowah, 1,155-1,060 in a sectional match.

Road dates at Lowndes and Colquitt last week meant two crucial Region 1-7A wins for the Camden County High soccer boys, and the girls’ ninth overall triumph in Moultrie. The girls are 3-1 in region play and the boys 2-2 with two regular-season matches left for both teams, both against Tift.

A home doubleheader with Tift will be the next chance for the Camden County High baseball Wildcats to get their first Region 1-7A victory. Camden followed a March 18 doubleheader loss at Colquitt (8-3 and 5-4) by falling twice Monday at Lowndes, (9-3 and 9-1).

Two wins Monday and last week elevated the Camden County High girls tennis team to 8-3 overall and the boys 7-4. Last Friday, the Wildcat boys and girls aced visiting Tift in Region 1-7A action, putting the boys 5-1 in league matches and the girls 3-3.
