County seeks water, sewer advisory board members

Nassau County’s manager is asking the public to apply to become part of the American Beach Water and Sewer Advisory Board.

Nassau school district board OKs contract with teachers

After a contentious negotiation process, the Nassau County School District board and the Nassau Teachers’ Association have finally reached an agreement on the 2020-21 instructional and salary contract. The school board unanimously approved it March 11.

The customs office and the city of Fernandina Beach has required the Ocean Highway and Port Authority bring the building up to standards. OHPA Chairman Danny Fullwood said while OHPA is working to correct the problem, the port is not under the city’s jurisdiction, and questions its authority to cite OHPA for code violations related to the building.

Nassau County eighth-grade students experience world of work

Nassau County School District hosted its Career Shadow Day on Feb. 19. The annual event is coordinated by the Career Education Department. Career Shadow Day was opportunity open to all Nassau County eighth-graders who registered and were willing to take on the follow-up assignment.

Amelia Island has changed a great deal since Betty Wilson graduated from high school, started a family and launched a 52-year career in health care. Gone is the drawbridge that connected Amelia Island to Yulee. There’s no more drag racing – one hopes – on a partially paved 14th Street.

County rejects 270-unit apartment complex in Yulee

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners put the brakes on a change to the county’s future land use map that would have allowed a high-density residential development to move forward. At commissioners’ Monday meeting, the board considered an amendment to the land use map to change 22.
The owners of the former offices of Florida Petroleum located at 231 N. Front St. in Fernandina Beach want to explore different opportunities for the property, and are willing to donate the building to an investor who could potentially move and repurpose the building.

POSSIBLE PRESERVATION?

With public funding falling through, it might be up to private investment to save a 95-year-old building on the Amelia River waterfront. Constructed in 1926, the 42-by-40-foot building began life as an oil storage warehouse for Gulf Refining Co.
